Meet the Shinwari Family

Mohammad Humayoon Shinwari and his extended family of 12 have taken political refuge here in Rochester.  They fled Afghanistan after being targeted by the Taliban for Mohammad’s involvement in an opposing political party.  His oldest son, at age 7, was kidnapped while walking home from school and had both of his arms broken by rebels known as members of the Taliban. 

Saint’s Place provided necessary furnishings, appliances and other household items for the family and set up the house for them prior to their arrival here.  Saint’s Place is also providing on-going support to the family through the Tutoring Program.

 Mohammad and his family are now reaching out to other Afghani families arriving in Rochester and are assisting Saint’s Place with furniture moving.  He is working with the Catholic Family Center’s Refugee and Immigration Department as an interpreter.
